Can't Come up with a Cute Title for this Post

After being in the 20's for 2 days, today is predicted to go up to close to 70 degrees. Strange winter! I'm not complaining though. Usually winter here is brutal. Last year my son was shoveling 5 feet of snow off our garage roof and Joe was snow blowing 3 times a day. The weight of all the snow last year, caved in our pool. This year, he's only had to use the snow blower 3 times for the whole winter. I can't remember a winter this mild. Today will be an open the window kind of day.

Yesterday I was able to do some more playing. I'm still playing with my Urban Odyssey fabric from Connecting Threads. I can't believe all the projects I've made from one Fat Quarter Sampler. And I still have more to play with!!

Yesterday I made this cute little drawstring bag. We plan on going out for St. Patrick's Day and I wanted just a small little bag to carry. I think this will be perfect!

The pattern is part of a kit I ordered from Connecting Threads a while back, using their Canterbury Collection. It's the perfect size for a little cash and my lipstick and phone.

Okay, I'm off for some coffee and breakfast, then on to enjoy the day! What are your plans?

Yesterday was a fun play day in the sewing studio. Connecting Threads sent me some of their new fabric line...Sweetgrass Prairie to play with. It's a really pretty line with a country feel and vibe to it. I think it's perfect for the blocks I chose.

There were so many blocks however, that I don't know who had the time to make the quilt. I have the book and enjoyed making some of the blocks and loved the stories that went along with them.

Migraines

Wednesday of last week, we had quite the scare. Joe was at work when his right arm and leg went completely numb. He was unable to walk and dragged himself to a railing where he called for help. The EMT's came and took him to the on-site medical center where they then took him to the hospital.

Of course everyones initial thought was stroke. He has a strong history of stroke and heart disease in his family. But Joe is incredibly healthy.....he works out hard daily, eats extremely healthily and has never smoked..

At the hospital he was given an MRI that showed absolutely no evidence of stroke. Also all heart tests came back that his heart is in great shape.

The neurologist is leaning toward Hemiplegic Migraines. Neither of us had ever heard of them. But after learning and finding out more, this is exactly happened to Joe. The whole episode he had at work was over withing 5 minutes, leaving him with a headache.

We are extremely thankful that what happened wasn't more serious. Although it was extremely scary, this is treatable. He has follow up appointments this week, but with absolutely no evidence of stroke or clots coming from anywhere, the Dr. is sure this is the right diagnosis.

I'm praising God and thankful for the EMT's at work and for my husbands safety.

Yesterday was one of those days in the sewing room. Things weren't going the way I planned, so I decided to cut my losses and quit before I messed anything else up. I decided to embroider instead. Here's my progress so far...............

While I'm waiting for the backing fabric to arrive for my latest quilt, I decided to try something new. I found the most adorable hand embroidery pattern here and decided to try crayon embroidery.

Have you tried it yet? Kinda neat. You trace your embroidery pattern and then take Crayola Crayons and color in parts of it. Yes, it has to be Crayola...that's what I've read anyway...something about the quality of the wax. Anyway, you color in parts, then cover it with paper and iron on the hottest setting until no more wax comes up on the paper. Then it's set to stitch.

I hooped it up, picked my Aurifil Wool colors and now I'm ready to stitch.

Cross Stitch and Aurifil

I finished up my cross stitch yesterday and hooped it up to hang in my sewing room.

What do you think?

I really enjoyed getting back into cross stitch with this project. And.....I think I'm hooked on stitching with
Aurifil Wool. Let me tell you why.

The coverage....only 1 strand worked perfectly on this 14 count Aida cloth. The color saturation.....very vibrant and rich, consistent through out. I really like that it doesn't twist while I'm stitching. No knots to untangle! And absolutely no shredding. Just really, really great to work with. I'm definitely going to do more designing around the Aurifil line.

Stitched on 14 Count Oatmeal Aida cloth from Charles Craft
Aurifil Wool colors used were....8442, 8805, 8810, 8464, and 8780

I started making some string blocks...............

Good Morning All. How was your Valentine's Day?

Joe and I had a beautiful candlelit dinner at home where he surprised me with a Sterling Heart Locket engraved with I Love You. I tried to get pictures, but they didn't come out. I'll keep trying.

My sister also sent me a huge box full of goodies.

My sister and I don't "do" birthdays, but mysteriously a package always seems to show up at each others' houses right around birthday time. Yup...my birthday is coming up. So with all those candles the house will spell good and I'll smell yummy too after my Lavender Bubble Bath. I just love, love, love my sister!

I also received a HUGE box of goodies from Pellon. I have all sorts of ideas for projects and they sent me some great supplies to play with.

I also received some great news from Connecting Threads. The pattern for my Follow the Leader quilt went live on their site yesterday as a FREE Download. Just go here to download.

I want to thank everyone too for all thier advice about my ottoman. I received some great pointers. I'm going to measure it today and try and get started. I'll keep you posted on the progress. I've got an idea for a new quilt design and a tutorial coming up, so I have lots to keep me in the studio!

Help!!! It's so Fugly!!

I need help....opinions.....pointers. See this ugly thing?

It's our living room ottoman and it's disgusting. I'm embarrassed to show it, in all its gross glory...but I need some help.

I want to cover this thing. It's stained...the fabric is shiny from wear... ick!! Ideally, I'd like to ditch it, but the hubs and the Rufus, love it.

So hears what I'm thinking. A nice quilted top, some piping...then some boxed pleats to hang down the sides. My concern is getting it to fit just right.

So I'm asking for help. Any pointers or tips I should know? Have any of you done this? I've never had to make anything fitted before.

I'm going to go on-line this morning and look for tutorials...if you find any can you hook me up? I'd be be oh so appreciative!!

Fat Quarter Shop

This morning is one of those mornings. Just can't wake up. Coffee....lots of coffee. I have too much I want to do to be this tired. Work-out....clean the house.....start a new quilt that I designed over the weekend....start sketching plans for a baby quilt. So what am I doing? Drooling over fabric from the Fat Quarter Shop. Wanna drool with me?

First up...Domestic Bliss by Liz Scott. I really like these colors, but admit, it's the name that first caught my eye. You all know I'm all about my domesticity.

How about Fairy Tale Friends by American Jane? This is just one of those lines that makes me happy to look at.

Having spent my teen years in Florida, Salt Air by Cosmo Cricket caught my eye. I really like the softly muted colors in this line. So calming.

I'm sure you've seen this next one. Reunion by Sweetwater. Sweetwater always comes up with some great lines and this one is no different. Really nice.

I think this last one is my favorite....Adventures with Alice by Darlene Zimmerman. Tea parties, the Mad Hatter........just a fun, fun line.

Cross Stitch and Aurifil

Yesterday I had some free time so I decided to play. One of my goals for 2012 was to not only design my own quilt patterns, but also design embroidery and cross-stitch. Years ago I was heavily into cross stitch. It's just so relaxing. Perfect to do in front of the tv. I like too, that it's a portable project. I'm hoping to take some projects with me this summer when the hubs and I are camping.

Anyway, I came up with a small sketch yesterday. Just my blog name and a small design. I started stitching yesterday using Aurifil Wool for the stitching. This is my first time using the Aurifil instead of floss for cross stitching and I'm impressed. You only need 1 strand for the stitches and the coverage is beautiful. Plus I'm finding that it doesn't tangle or shred.

So here's where I'm at so far......the color palette...........

It's a small design, but ya gotta start somewhere. I'll have the complete color palette up when it's finished. I'm planning on just hooping it and putting it in the sewing studio. But it definitely wet my chops for more!

Book Review.....Make it Sew Modern

Martingale and Company.... Home of "That Patchwork Place" was kind enough to send me a copy of one of their newest releases for review.

It's Make it Sew Modern by Vanessa Christenson. Many of you may already be familiar with Vanessa's blog. She has a beautiful modern sense of style and showcases it in her sewing.

This book is just full of her projects. And I have to say, besides the projects, it's just a beautiful book to browse through. The photography is just stunning.

But lets get to some of the projects.

Take a look at this quilt. I love the gray and white. This quilt is just so pretty. Joe's grandmother left us some beautiful hand crocheted doilies and what a great way to showcase them.

I really like this little bracelet too. Just some twisted fabric strips stitched together...so easy. I think a few of these would be perfect for summer.

I'm really into fabric flowers lately too. This one would be perfect on a sweater as shown here, or on a bag as shown in the next picture. How about on a hair band for your favorite little girl? I can even see making a bunch of these and making a pretty spring wreath.

Now most of you know that I started sewing by making bags and purses. So of course I can't resist these. The first is this pleated beauty. I really like the black fabric with the pop of the blue flower.

And this tote would be perfect for a library bag or just to grab when you're running errands.

There's so much more in this book. From pillows, to scarves, to wreaths....something sure to spark your creative juices. I like that none are too time consuming or difficult. A confident beginner could make all the projects in this book.

I really hope you'll look into this book. It would make a great addition to your sewing library and I know you'll be inspired.

Am I the Only One??

Wow! It's too early in the morning and I haven't had enough coffee to do all this thinking.

I opened my e-mail this morning and received an e-mail from Linky Followers. It seems Google will be doing away with Friend Connect for all non-blogger blogs and maybe eventually even from blogger. So, how to keep track of followers? Some are using Blog Lovin, some don't even have a follower button on their blog.

So I want to ask all of you a question? How do you feel about Follower buttons? Do you like them or no?
What makes you follow a blog? Content? Giveaways?

I have mixed emotions about Follower buttons and am curious what you think about them.

I managed to get the house cleaned yesterday....everything but my sewing room. That will be today's adventure.

Fabric needs to be sorted and organized. I saw a lot of those "what was I thinking" fabrics in there....

The cutting table needs to be cleaned off................

And finally, the books need to be organized before the shelf collapses........

But before I get to all that, I'm taking my son out to breakfast. How I got roped into paying for breakfast when he just got a raise, I'll never know. But as he said, I should be honored to enjoy his presence. That boy.....how can ya not love him...........

Valentines

Good Morning all! How was your weekend? Did you watch the Super Bowl? We did...along with switching back and forth to Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl. Joe had never heard of the Puppy Bowl, but after one viewing....he's hooked. He was even switching the channel to check back on those adorable puppies. I think Rufus even liked it! I swear he was watching tv.

I finished up my project for Pellon and have the tutorial all written to send off to them this morning. Took some pictures to tease you with......

What do you think?

Don't know how much sewing I'll get done today. It's cleaning day. Joe cleaned the pellet stove over the weekend and there's dust everywhere. Plus, I need to get in the sewing studio and do some organizing.

I'm off to have a bit more coffee to wake up and then start my day!

Sneak Peek

After an extremely dismal start in the sewing studio yesterday, I did manage to get a project done.

In the beginning, it was one of those days where I probably shouldn't have attempted to sew. Nothing was working out. Days like that frustrate me because I'm too stubborn to give up and walk away. So after a coffee break...I managed to get a little something done. Not gonna show you all of it...only part....

Process

Thought I'd show you a bit of my creative process this morning....then I have some news to share.

I love to draw and sketch. I've done it as long as I can remember. When I was little, my favorite gift was always coloring books and crayons. I still love the smell of crayons. I remember one coloring book in particular that my Grandmother had bought me. It was a Mary Poppins coloring book with tracing paper between the pages. I think that's how I got hooked on drawing...by starting with those tracing pages.

When I was a teen, I always had a sketch book and colored pencils with me. My mom was sick a lot and I spent a lot of time in hospital waiting rooms. I would always sketch. I would draw anything. A flower, a stick...whatever was in front of me. Just to draw.

In my junior year of high school, I won first place in my school annual art show with a pen and ink drawing I had done of a ship. Later, that same drawing won first place in the county art show and I went on to earn a scholarship to a private art school for a year. Now for the sad part, even with all those awards, I still didn't think I was good enough and I forfeited the scholarship...all because I was scared. What a waste. I was so intimidated by the other winners' work, that I thought I didn't deserve to be in the school. Never mind, that other people thought I was deserving.

So back to the creative process. I still start out "old school". With a sketchbook and some colored pencils.

For my Follow the Leader quilt, I first sketched it on graph paper then took it to my EQ7 for the final pattern. My bird embroidery was just a sketch.

I'm in the process now of sketching and designing some blocks and a new quilt.

So that's my process. What's yours?

Now for the news.....my Follow the Leader quilt will soon be on the Connecting Threads website as a free download. Connecting Threads has given me so many opportunities. Including the honor of being part of their Independent Designers Program.

Also, Pellon has asked me to be part of their artists page and will soon have projects of mine up.

All this has kind of brought me full circle, so to speak. I still feel undeserving of the opportunities I've been given...still don't think I'm good enough. But this time, I'm not letting fear and insecurity win out. I'm taking the opportunities these great companies are giving me and running with them. I just feel so blessed, honored....and most of all Thankful.

Some things work....Some things Don't

Joe had to work a double shift yesterday so I had lots of time to fill.

I finished my book.

Loved this book. Off to buy the sequel today.

I finished my Love Birds embroidery. Just need to put some fabric around it and make it into a cute little pillow or doorknob hanger.

Made up a little Valentine's Table Runner. My own design. Need to quilt and bind it.

This however, didn't work as planned. I had made this block last week and wanted to add some machine embroidery. I found this cute little "Cupid" that I thought would look cute. It didn't. The background fabric was too busy for it to show even when I adjusted the density of the stitching. Oh well. I'll start over on this one.

I'm learning that not all things work out in the sewing studio and not to get too stressed. How do you handle things that don't work?

They are my first dresdens and now I'm hooked. They remind me of pretty flowers and I love how different fabrics give such different looks.

After I had completed one, I couldn't decide what to do with it. I didn't want to make a quilt or a pillow, I wanted something different. So I decided to make them into candle mats. I added another dresden to the back of each and some buttons.

I love the soft colors of this green one. Will be perfect for spring.

I see me making a lot more of these in the future. How about for a different shaped mug rug? Or a ribbon between the 2 layers to hand from a pegged shelf? Yup...I see lots more of these!!

So you know I've been getting into hand embroidery. It's so calming and relaxing to me. I sit in the quiet and just stitch. It's a good time for thinking or praying. I used to do a lot of cross-stitch and have started to get back into that as well.

One thing I've always disliked though is embroidery hoops. My threads would get caught on the little screw and I always hated the marks the hoop left behind. I was always good and un-hooped my work when I was done stitching for the day, but there were still times I couldn't get those hoop marks out with out ironing like crazy and then that would distort the stitches. Ugh!

This is how the frame looks when you open the package.

This picture is a little blurry, but I want to show the ribbing on the clamp. This holds the fabric tight as a drum. Much tighter than I've ever had with a hoop. No need to re-tighten like I used to with hoops.

You just snap the 4 pieces together to make the frame.....

Position your fabric and clamp into place.............

And after you remove your stitchery....look....virtually no hoop marks!!

When you're done, just take the frame apart for easy storage. What I really appreciate too, is how light these are. I stitch right-handed and hold the frame in my left hand. I have arthritis in my left hand and I can't hold heavy frames for any length of time without pain. Not so with this frame.

Why I left the Modern Quilt Guild's Facebook Page

I've been debating whether to write this post or not. I'm not usually one to write a post like this, but there are times when you just have to be true to yourself and say what you need to say. For me, this is one of those times.

When I started seriously quilting a little more than a year ago, I looked for blogs and sites to inspire, teach and encourage me. I found many. One of them was The Modern Quilt Guild's Facebook Page. I read and understood their guidelines and not having a quilting style, decided to join the group.

At this point, I need to be very clear. This post is not directed to any members of that Facebook Page. I have posted on that page and received some great comments and feedback about my work, so I assumed all was well. After all, all my work was very well received.

Then yesterday, I received this e-mail from their "Social Director". I've not included her name, but the rest of the e-mail is word for word.....

I did not advertise on this page. I did not do store promotions. I did post about my Blog Birthday Giveaway not knowing it was wrong to do so. I did that not to promote myself, but I really did just want to share a great giveaway.

The line above about "this isn't the place to broadcast a link to every new blog post you write" is one of the things I had a problem with. I did not link to blog posts on that page, other than the giveaway I stated before. I did share pictures of my projects from my Facebook page, like you have all seen. Those projects were always complimented and "liked'. That is, until they were removed yesterday. In fairness, I do not know who removed them from the Modern Quilt Guilds Page, but they were removed.

As I said, before I joined the group, I had read all their guidelines, including this, that I was directed to in the above e-mail. Apparently I needed to be reminded. I joined the group because I wanted encouragement and inspiration and to learn from more experienced quilters. I like all kinds of quilting. Modern. Traditional. Whatever. I also know that I am a far from perfect quilter or sewer. There are many who are so much better than me. Just take a look at Connie, Sunni, Jenna or Melissa...just to name a few. I am passionate about my sewing.

But I thought I was joining a "group" and the "group" has been very supportive and encouraging. But it seems that one person has decided to take down my posts, and I only assume because she felt that they did not fit. I'll remind you, I've received nothing but kind and encouraging comments on the things I did post....that is until they were removed yesterday.

I know there are different styles of quilting and everyone has their favorite. But is it really up to just one person to decide what goes on a "groups" page?

A while back, I wrote this post...about just being kind. I still believe all that I wrote.

So in the Spirit of that post, I decided to start my own Facebook Group called Sew What. It is a non-judgemental page to share your sewing. I don't care if you sew clothes, quilts, accessories, whatever. I want to see it. I want us all to share our knowledge, failures and inspiration. The only time I will remove a post, is if it's racial or bigoted or mean spirited. I have never and will not ever criticize another sewists work. Why would I have to? I don't need to tear someone else down to build myself up. And maybe I'm wrong, but I see taking down my posts from the "groups" page, when the "group" apparently had no problem with it, as being critical.

I also want to give a shout out to Kris and this Facebook Page. This is how I feel a page should be run. Nothing but positive and encouraging words from the administrator. Kris..you're the best. You're always supportive and kind. Thank you.

So...that's why I left. If you took the time to read all through this, thank you. I know it was a long post and not the kind I usually write.

I don't know if I'll lose any of you as followers because of it, but I sincerely hope not. You all mean the world to me and I truly look forward to your kind and encouraging words. At the same time, I have to be true and honest to myself.

Follow the Leader

I finished my "Follow the Leader" Quilt. Wednesday, when I was just sitting around being lazy, I managed to get the binding done. Follow that with a nice wash to get all crinkly and some pictures in what little snow we have and TA DA!!

Yesterday, I was also able to finish writing up the pattern for this quilt and sent it off to Connecting Threads. I love being a part of their Independent Designer Program. They've given me so many opportunities.

So, the stats.....the quilt measures 36 x 40. The fabric is from Connecting Threads and is called "Tulane". It's scheduled for release in March 2012. It was machine quilted with Aurifil Thread.

Right now I only have a PDF version of the pattern but am looking into hard copies.

I'm really proud of this quilt. It's my first quilt totally designed by me. It started out as a sketch on some graph paper and was tweaked and arranged on my EQ7 Software. I had the idea in my head for quite a while and when I found the perfect fabric, it was a go!

Not only are the projects in this book pretty, but they're quick too. Perfect for when you need a little gift for someone or just want a quick project in-between those larger ones.

How about this adorable pillow with a little applique and hand embroidery?

These sweet little hearts are perfect for Valentines Day. Embroider your sweeties name on them...what a cute little gift tag they would make.

First off, I love those cover pillows....especially the one with the bird. Again, a little hand embroidery on that would be adorable.

Tired

I'm tired today. Not sure why. Maybe I got shopped out yesterday....don't know.

Today will be a slow day. An errand for hubby. Home to bind my Follow the Leader quilt.

Looking through some cross stitch magazines to find a project. I've had the urge to cross stitch something.

Something easy for dinner. Homemade chicken soup I think. Comfort in a bowl.

Laundry.

A nap.

One of my favorite things...........a lavender bubble bath, followed by lavender chamomile lotion.

Lounging in warm, comfy, cozy sweats.

But for now, another cup of coffee.

In the meantime, I had some time to play with Pellons Stick and Washaway. It was perfect for my machine embroidery. I decided to do a towel project. Towels can be notoriously hard to machine embroider on. Normally you only have to put a stabilizer on the back of your embroidery piece, but with towels you need one on the front too, otherwise the looping from the towels distorts the stitching.

The Stick and Wash Away was great. All I had to do was peel the paper and stick it on to the front of the towel. I deliberately picked a dense, stitch heavy pattern to really test this stuff. It was perfect. The stitches sat right on top with absolutely no pull through of the toweling loops. No gumming up of my needle either.

The design stitched up beautifully and I liked how the stitching sat on top so I was able to easily cut the jump threads.

Next, I took it to a tub of cool water and submerged it. I let it sit for a couple of minutes underwater and the Stick and Wash Away just dissolved.

This was so easy to work with and I'm excited about it. Machine embroidering on towels was something I wanted to do, but had avoided because of the problems I had before.

One of my Goals for the New Year was to try and make 2 gifts a month. Well, this month I've done that. Now I can add this adorable towel to the list.

Book Review: Button and Bead Jewelry

I love doing book reviews and JJ recently sent me one of their new books to review.

It's Button and Bead Jewelry by Deborah Schneebeli-Morrell.

If you're anything like me, you have a lot of buttons and ribbons and trims in your sewing stash and this book offers some new ways to use them.

The first project that caught my eye was the Yo-Yo jewelry. Along with the necklace on the cover above, there's this cute little corsage.

I played around yesterday and came up with a couple of my own. I made mine into pins.

I can picture these to embellish a sweater or t-shirt or even glued on to a little girls headband. I'm going to play around more with yo-yos. I've got some great scraps to play with and some beautiful buttons to use.

This next project is definitely on my list. It's a chiffon ribbon and glass bead necklace. I love how soft and feminine it is.

None of the projects in this book are too time consuming...which I like. Some instant gratification in between some of those bigger projects we all do. Also, you don't need to go out and buy a bunch of new gadgets to use. Just some buttons, some beads, some ribbon and maybe a couple of clasps and chains that you can find at any craft store. I'm going to have a lot of fun with this book.

Hi. In case you don't know me....I'm Rufus. My Mom, left her blog account open and I've snuck in to take over. Of course we all know where she is....in the sewing room.

That's where she always is and I'm getting tired of it.

I remember when I first came to live here. All 2.2 pounds of me. It was all naps and cuddles...snuggly blankets.

She used to buy me clothes and tell me how handsome I was.

Now I just wander around the house. Oh sure, she's always where I can see her. I follow her everywhere...looking cute...hoping to distract her. I bring her my toys and squeak them as loud as I can. Sure, she stops and plays with me, but then always goes back to that machine. What does it have that I don't? Look at how cute I am?

I love to play and I share my toys.....

So here's what you do. Come to the door dressed as the mailman. He's always here, bringing fabric and stuff and she'll never suspect. Then when she opens the door, I'll dance and beg for attention. That's your cue.

Opps...gotta run. I thinks she's on to me. I'll go back to my pillow and put on my sad face.

So Baby Girl came over yesterday to practice her sewing. What a great way to spend the day.....with Marissa! Can't tell I love her much huh?

She had to make a small pillow for her home-ec class. So she got to make 2 and practice her machine skills, some hand sewing and sewing a button on. She does have one issue she needs to get over though. She has a fear of getting stuck with pins and needles. Part of the trade Baby Girl, part of the trade. I told her not to worry until she puts a machine needle right through her finger like I once did.

Birthday Gift for Marissa

If you've been following my blog for a while, then you know that my niece Marissa is one of my favorite people. I just adore her. She's my Baby Girl.....even though she's now 14! So if you ever hear me refer to "Baby Girl".....that's Marissa!

She loves to draw and decorate cakes. Actually she does a pretty amazing job on decorating cupcakes. This past September at the State Fair, she even got to meet the "Cake Boss" and get an autographed cookbook from him.

So yesterday was Baby Girl's Birthday Party and I made her a little something.

It's an art portfolio. A sketch pad, and a place for markers and colored pencils. And of course, I made it with some cute cupcake fabric. The perfect place for her to sketch all her cake plans.

Today, Marissa's coming out to practice her sewing. She's taking a home-ec class in school and is making a pillow. So I get to spend part of my day with her! I can't wait! One of my favorite ways to spend the day!

Quiet day in the sewing studio yesterday. I finally got around to finishing my "Make it Do" embroidery. I decided to make it into a wall hanging for the living room. It's a good reminder to simplify!

I LOVE this embroidery. I had so much fun stitching this. Hand embroidery is just so relaxing to me and it's fun to watch the different parts of the design come together.

Book Review...."The New Crewel"

So you all know that I've been smitten with hand embroidery lately. So when Amanda from Lark Crafts sent me this new book to review...I jumped on the chance!

The book is "The New Crewel" by Katherine Shaughnessy.

It's just full of inspiration! But first a little bit of what "crewel" is. Crewel is a form of embroidery that uses two-ply worsted wool threads on linen. If you've ever embroidered, you can do crewel as it uses the same stitches as found in embroidery. It's what inspired me to start my little project....

I've always liked the look of embroidery on linen and with my Aurifil wools around for inspiration, I figured this was a great time to give crewel a try.

Take a look at some of the projects in the book.

How cute are these little ornaments? Or you could make them into sachets. A perfect little gift and small project to try crewel with. I can picture these as cute little door knob hangers.

I really like the delicate look of this next one. Reminds me of dandelions blowing in the breeze.

And this one is definitely one of my favorites. I like the thickness of the crewel work and the texture it adds.

I hope you give crewel a try. It's relatively inexpensive to try. A piece of linen, some wool, a needle and an embroidery hoop and you're on your way. It's a nice little relaxing project to do while watching tv.

As I was organizing my stash the other day, it occurred to me why I buy fabric? And it got me curious as to why (and how) you buy fabric.

Do you buy fabric for a specific project? Like you have this great bag you want to make....hint...hint, so you go out and buy your fabric....

Or, are you like me? I buy fabric that speaks to me.............

then I let the fabric tell me what the project will be.
Take this quilt for instance.....

I'd had the sketch for a while, but didn't know what fabric I would use. When I saw the upcoming "Tulane" line for Connecting Threads, it spoke to me....it said...I'm you're "Follow the Leader" fabric.

As I browse on-line sites and fabric stores...some fabric just calls out to me.

So I've learned, that even if I don't have a specific project for that fabric, to buy it anyway. The project will always make itself known.

That's not to say, I haven't had to rush out and buy fabric for a specific project, I have. But most of the time I just buy what speaks to me. How about you? Why?

Great day in the Studio yesterday................6 out of 10 rows completed for my Follow the Leader Quilt.

I'm using a yet to be released line of fabric from Connecting Threads, so you're getting a sneak peek! I can tell you the colors are to die for. Very rich and saturated!

Back in the Studio today with plans to finish the top of this quilt. What are your plans for the day?

Designing and Sewing

Did you ever have one of those days where everything just flowed? Where you totally got into a zone and everything worked out the way it was supposed to? That was my day yesterday.

I had the most amazing and productive day in the studio. My sewing machine was cooperating, I didn't need my seam ripper....everything just clicked.

I was playing with my EQ7 over the holidays and converted a sketch that I had drawn a while back.

I'm calling it "Follow the Leader"
Connecting Threads was kind enough to send me a Fat Quarter Bundle of one of their upcoming fabrics. It won't be out until March 2012, but I'll tell you, it's beautiful! The colors are so rich and saturated. I can't wait for you to see it. When I saw the fabric, I knew it would be perfect for this quilt that I had sketched.

So, in the sewing studio yesterday, there were lots of Flying Geese.

Today, I'll be back in the studio, stitching up a storm again!

As you know, I'm also loving my hand embroidery. I wanted to come up with something I could stitch while I was just sitting in the living room listening to music or whatever. I came up with this little design to stitch on linen with my Aurifil wool.

I also have some sketches done for some embroidery patterns, but you can't see them yet!

I can't believe what a great day it was yesterday! I love days like that!

Joe went back to work today after having 11 days off. I miss him already. If the past 11 days are what retirement will be like, I day "Bring it on!". I love having him home!

So now it's back to me and Rufus.

"About Town" Bag Tutorial

In my Newbie status as a pattern writer, a couple of things were accidentally omitted from the cutting directions.

Please note:

From your lining fabric, please cut two 14 and 1/2 " squares.

Also from your lining fabric, cut two 2" by 3and 1/8" pieces for your zip tab
and, two 11" by 5 and 1/8" pieces for your zip casing

So let's get started. I'm going to assume that you have all your fabric cut out and I'm only going to walk through what I think are the tricky parts....like the fabric braid and the zipper. I'll also have pics of the lining and pocket method. For the rest, like attaching your handles and the lining to the bag, I'll have you refer back to your pattern.
Also, when you've completed your bag, please post it to the "About Town Flickr Group so that I can see all your lovely creations!!

So all of your fabric is cut. Let's start with the braid.

Cut your charms in half to make 14, 2 and 1/2"by 5" rectangles. You will use 13 for this project.

RST, place 2 of your rectangles like this............

Press seam and this is what it will look like.............

From this point on, you'll be sewing on the long edge of the rectangles. Starting at lower left side, sew rectangle RST to the two already joined rectangles.

Press the seam and open.....

Now add rectangle to lower right side........

Continue adding rectangles, alternating sides, until braid is formed. You will use 13 of the 14 rectangles that you cut.

Square up top and bottom of braid (short sides), removing points.

Repeat on long sides of braid. You will now have a rectangle approx. 5"x15"

Referring to your pattern, now sew the two 5 and 1/2"by 15" pieces to both sides of the center braid panel. Press seams toward braid.

Now fuse the Pellon Fusible Fleece to the WS of both your outer bag front and back pieces.

Referring to your pattern, this is where you'll now do your stitching with your Perle Cotton on the sides of your braided panel.

With RST, sew bag front to bag back along sides and bottom.

Referring to your pattern, make flat bottom on outer bag, then turn back RSO.

Again, referring to your pattern, this is the time to make your bag handles and pin them in place to your outer bag.

Referring to your pattern, follow the directions to make the interior pockets and lining.

Now lets tackle the zipper.

Bring your zip tab pieces RST and sew along sides and bottom.

Turn the zip tab piece RSO.

Take the closed zip end and fold the zip tab in half over the zip end to encase it. Match edges of zip tab, pin and top stitch on all sides.

Take one of the zip casing pieces, WSU and fold in both short edges 1/8"

Fold in half lengthwise and iron along crease.

Open out and fold in long edges in toward the center crease that you just made. Repeat with other zip casing piece.

Unzip the zipper, with the zip RSU, take the raw end of the zipper, the one without the zip tab attached, and fold and pin the zip fabric end to the casing. The casing is opened out.

Using your zipper foot, top stitch the zip into position in the casing along the long edge. Your casing is still open at this point.

Turn over the casing and fold it closed. Top stitch all around the edges of the zip casing to trap the zip inside.

Repeat with the other zip casing piece and other half of zipper.

This is what your encased zipper will now look like.

Unzip the zip and working with half of the zip at a time, measure and mark the center of your zip and the center of one piece of your lining fabric. Measure down 1 and 1/2" from top of lining piece and pin zip casing in place. Top stitch the zip casing RSO to the right side of the lining along the top edge of the zip casing.

Repeat with the other side of the zip casing and the other lining piece.

Pin sides and bottom of lining pieces RST and stitch, leaving a 3" opening in the bottom of bag for turning. Make flat bottom for lining the same way you did for outer bag.

Now referring to your pattern, attach your lining to your bag and finish your bag.

New Year's Resolutions??

Do you make New Year's Resolutions? I usually don't. I make goals. Or is that the same as a resolution? I'm not sure. Resolutions always seem to get broken, where I think a goal is something to work toward. Make sense? I try to set reachable goals. Then I make a plan to reach them. Steps to take to reach them.
So here are some I've come up with for 2012. Some sewing related and some personal goals.

Sewing:

1.) I want to make more original designs. Be it quilts, bags, whatever. To help with that, I'm going to keep my sketch book handy in the living room, so I can doodle whenever the mood strikes.

2.) I've really enjoyed getting back into hand embroidery so I want to draw and design my own hand embroidery patterns with the goal of publishing them either on this blog or in PDF so others can make them.

3.) I want to get an original design published in a magazine. To help with that, I'm going to start contacting magazines as to how to go about submitting to them.

4.) I want to make at least 2 gifts a month and have them put away. That way I won't be so backed up when the Holiday's or a birthday come around.

Personal Goals:

1.) Take the time every morning to quiet myself and pray. To dedicate the day to God and what He would have me do, and to practice an attitude of gratitude. I want to eliminate complaining. I have to much to be thankful for to ever complain.

2.) I want to continue to exercise 5 days a week with the goal of adding some strength training. It's not about weight control for me as much as it is about health and feeling good. I feel so much better when I take the time to work out and I want to continue to make it a habit.

3.) I want to commit to eating healthier. Days go by before a vegetable enters these lips and I want to correct that. To help with that, salads or a vegetable soup for lunches and a V8 after my work-outs.

4.) To spend less time watching mindless TV. I don't know about you, but it's way to easy sometimes to get caught up in stupid reality shows. ( yes, I'm guilty of watching a Housewife or two). I'm already a big reader, so I plan on replacing the TV with more books or sewing/embroidery time.

So those are my goals. I thought it would be good to get them written down....to hold myself accountable and to have written reminder.

What We Did Over Christmas Vacation

Joe and I were busy over his Christmas vacation. We got a lot done. Some cleaning, some organizing. Joe got to play in the garage and I got to play in my new sewing studio! Yup, one of my Christmas presents from Joe was to take our guest room and convert it into a sewing studio for me. We've had the guest room for about 6 years and in that time, had only used it twice for guests. Our house isn't that big, so in the absence of guests, the room had turned into a junk room of sorts... catching all sorts of things we didn't know what to do with. I had outgrown my sewing room that was in combo with our laundry room, so Joe came up with the brilliant idea of making the guest room my studio. I am beyond excited about it and love it!

One of the things that was tucked away in the guestroom was Joe's Grandmother's Antique Singer. Joe cleaned and shined it up and we now have it proudly on display in our living room with one of my quilts. It's just so beautiful and special to us.

The detail on it is just so beautiful.

I got to spend some time in the studio yesterday. I made another version of my About Town Bag to go with the tutorial I'm doing on Monday, January 2nd. I'll walk you through all the tricky parts..........like the zipper! Even though the zipper is not hard...I promise! I hope you have your pattern and supplies! Unfortunately a couple of things were omitted from the pattern, but if you just go here, you'll find the corrections.

Book Review...."Pretty in Patchwork Doll Quilts"

Have you seen this book? Pretty in Patchwork: Doll Quilts published by Lark Crafts. I was kindly given one to review and it's just such a fun little book!

Packed into this book are 24 great little quilts to piece and to stitch. What a great way to try out some new techniques. Perfect to dig into your stash and use some scraps.

Take a closer look at the cover quilt. The finished size is 23" sqaure. Perfect for a little table topper. To me, it just cries out for some hand stitching around the star! I'm thinking this block would be a perfect way to introduce my niece to quilting. Big enough pieces for her first time.

There's a page in the front of the book that outlines some embroidery stitches if your new to embroidery. This book has very clear instructions and templates are included in the back of the book. This is the time to play....applique, embroidery, english and foundation piecing.

This next one is one of my favorites. I've been so into my embroidery lately and I love all the hand stitching on this one. A great way to experiment with some new threads. This one finishes up to 23 x 19". Instant gratification! None of the projects in this book are time consuming.

Wait till you see this one! What little girl wouldn't love to have this doll quilt complete with it's own little doll? Too, too cute!

Time for A New Project

Good Morning All!! How was your weekend? Last shopping weekend before Christmas! Are you done? We are. Today I just have a few small gifts to wrap.

It was quite the productive weekend here. Made 2 huge batches of sauce...we're having lasagna for Christmas dinner and I wanted extra sauce to freeze. Made meatballs and a 3rd batch of sauce for my husband to bring baked ziti to the guys at work. Only made 2 kinds of Christmas cookies, so that was easy. Chocolate Whiskey Balls and Italian Fig Cookies.

I got time in the sewing room too. Made this cute little guy...more about him in a later post.....

So now it's time to start a new project. This time I chose a quilt pattern that has blocks for embroidery. I get to combine 2 of my favorite things!

It's a pattern from The Noble Wife called A Beautiful Day.

This picture came out terrible, so click on the link above to get a clear shot of this adorable pattern. If you're not familiar with The Noble Wife, go check out Jacquelynne's site. Her patterns are just adorable. Take a look at the yummy fabrics for this quilt.

I really like that I can do some hand embroidery on this too. Although, Jacquelynne has the embroidery designs digitized for machine embroidery too.

I also bought the Add-A-Quarter 6" Ruler. This thing is indispensable for paper piecing! You just fold back your paper after you've sewn a seam. line up the ruler...there's a little lip edge that fits right up against the paper, then you trim to a perfect 1/4 inch!

Book Review...."50 Fabulous Paper Pieced Stars" by Carol Doak

Martingale and Company was kind enough to send me a copy of Carol Doak's 50 Fabulous Paper Pieced Stars to review.

I got hooked on paper piecing when I made my Summer Sampler Series Quilt, so I was thrilled when I got this book!

What Carol has done is create patterns for 50 Stars representing each state.

Stars like Alabama...........

And Colorado.....................

And New Jersey............

Each Star is made up of 8 individual sections that are paper pieced, then sewn together to make a 12" block. What's nice is that you can take any section of any block and combine them to make endless variations of stars...way beyond just the 50 in the book. You can really let your imagination go wild with this one!

Carol has very clear instructions and this book even includes a DVD of Carol herself explaining and demonstrating her technique.

Each block has full size printable templates...just copy them and print them out. You do however, need to add the 1/4" seam allowance to the outside of each block, but that's easy to do.

I got into my stash yesterday and made my Home State's Star.....New York.........

I got so excited thinking about the colors for this that I forgot to put black thread in the machine!! Oh well!

I had no problem putting the block together, Carol's instructions were great. With each block she includes cutting instructions for your fabric. To be on the safe side, I cut my fabric about 1/2' larger than she suggested.

I love my block and think it calls for some hand quilting. I think it's destined to be a candle mat.

So if you're into paper piecing, I would definitely add this book to your library. Endless possibilities. How about a sampler quilt of all the States you've lived in? Or if you've only lived in one, different fabrics for the same block? I can see making a block for family members who live in different states and having them sign the block, then make a unique family sampler quilt.

Product Review...Learn to Crochet and Learn to Knit

Product Review........Simplicity's Deluxe Bias and Piping Machine

Have you seen one of these yet? It's Simplicity's Deluxe Bias and Piping Machine. It's a pretty handy little gadget.

Simplicity was kind enough to send me one for review along with some supplies to make piping with.

When you open the box, everything is all neatly contained.

It comes with complete instructions, a Teflon Iron Surface, A Single Fold Bias Tip, A Piping Tip, A Bias Tip Iron Cover and Piping Cord Iron Cover.

First up, I made some Bias Binding. After cutting my fabric on 2 and 1/4" wide, on the bias...I wound the fabric around the spool that's included with the machine.........

Next, I fed it through the Single Fold Bias Tip and over the iron plate........

Hit the "run" button and it automatically feeds over the iron plate and comes out the other side as perfectly folded and pressed bias tape.

The Teflon Iron surface gets very hot, so be careful. There is also a temperature control for different fabrics. The machine warms up very quickly and has a speed control for controlling how fast it's fed over the Iron surface.

Next, I made some piping. This was a little trickier. You need to wind the fabric in the same way that you did for binding, but there is a slot for it to stand up. Then you have to also feed the cord and the Fusible Film through the Piping Tip. The slots for everything are clearly marked but it took a little bit to get them all in just right.

Then you proceed the same way you did for the Bias Binding. I slowed the speed a bit when making the piping so I could keep everything from twisting as it went through. It passes over the ironing plate the same way the Bias Binding does. The heat fuses the film to the fabric enclosing the cord.

I'm pleased with the ease of use of this machine and I really liked how the binding and piping turned out. I also like the idea of making my own piping using coordinating fabrics that I have. I've never used much piping in projects before, but I will now.

Book Review..............Everyday Handmade

I was so thrilled to receive a copy of "Everyday Handmade" by to review. The authors are Cassie Barden and Adrienne Smitke.

I have Cassie's previous book "The New Handmade and loved it. I've made many of the projects from it.

Cassie's new book has 22 all new projects that are easy and fun. Take a look at a few of my favorites.

This "Garden Party Selvage Wristlet" is just fab! This one is definitely on my to-do list. I'm saving all my selvages now. What a great way to remember some fabrics by!

How about this adorable "Ladybug Coin Purse" ? This is just so cute! I picture this as a great way for your favorite little girl to take her lunch money to school....or....what a great little present to go along when you give money as a gift.

Now that I'm attempting knitting and crochet...attempting being the key word, I think I might need to make this "Knitting Needle" Case.

This project would be easily adaptable for crochet hooks or how about a colored pencil or marker holder for your inner artist?

There are many more great projects in this book from an e-reader cover, to coasters, to a sweet little embroidered tea set.

All the instructions are very clear and where templates are needed, full size one's are included. No need to enlarge, which is nice. Any beginner to intermediate sewist can easily complete these projects.

Inspired by the tote bag on the cover, I dug into my stash and made my own version.

I had some home dec weight tweed fabric and home dec weight faux suede for the lining. I took some fabric scraps and covered some buttons. The squares were stitched using Aurifil wool thread.

This is a great tote for me to load my embroidery or a book into when I have to sit and weight at appointments. Nice long handles, so I can just throw it over my shoulder.

I got my wreath made yesterday and I'm really happy with it. I finally got to use my Sizzix. I used it to cut out the "lights" from felt. Found some blue ornaments I liked at the Dollar Store and now have a wreath for the winter.

I also had some time to sit and relax and work on my embroidery from Cotton Blossom Farm. This is just so fun to work on and I'm really loving watching it come together.

Not sure if this is destined to become a wall hanging or a pillow. We'll have to wait and see.

Today, I'm putting up the Christmas Tree for Joe and I to decorate tonight. Joe's getting a cold with a sore throat...so maybe a nice hot toddy will help tonight.

HMPH. That's my disgusted noise. I had all these plans yesterday to make a wreath for the holiday season. I had visions of red and green, cute little felt cut-outs, etc...etc...etc....

Wanna see what I got done?

Yup. That's it. I wrapped the wreath in yarn. Time consuming. Takes A LOT of yarn....more than you think. I like it though.

But....after all that was done, I just wasn't feeling the red and green. I don't just want this wreath for Christmas, I want it for the winter. So...............off I go to buy blue....blue felt, blue embellishments....icy, wintry blue.

I finished my pillow yesterday and it's now in it's place of honor for the winter holidays.....my rocker!

I love it! The kit is from Sassy Packs and I have 3 more seasons to work on. I like the idea of the pillows instead of the wall hanging. I get to spread out my stitching and have seasonal decorations. A win, win deal. I did a product review for a little gadget that helped me finish this pillow. Stay tuned...the review will be up on Tuesday, December 6th.

Also, a project I made for my former Pastor's daughter arrived safely yesterday. It was a panel from The Noble Wife that I added some machine embroidery to. Welcome to the world baby Liam and congratulations to the proud parents....Jess and Garr!

Today's going to be a no-sew day. Time to make a new wreath for my door for the winter. I was inspired by the book Stash Happy Felt. A straw wreath, some yarn, some felt. Add a few buttons and maybe some Sizzix cutouts and I'll have a new decoration.
